http://www.carterworx.com/index.htm Refrigerators & Freezers All your major kitchen appliances will last longer if you keep them clean. The dust bunny forest that grows under your refrigerator and dishwasher traps heat. Various components of these appliances will wear out faster when hot. Most compressors are underneath the ‘fridge and can break down when overheated by dust build-up. The compressor is the most frequently replace part and not always covered by the warranty. So cleaning underneath your refrigerator will help your refrigerator run more efficiently for a long time. Your cleaning frequency will vary, depending on things like how many hairy pets you have and how crummy your kitchen floor gets.
Two or three times a year, vacuum underneath
your refrigerator. This shouldn’t be too hard or time consuming. On the
front of your refrigerator, you will find a small panel at the bottom that
is attached with spring clips. Simply pull off this panel and run the
vacuum hose attachment under there. If you have a lot of loose Legos and
Barbie shoes in your house, you may want to look under there with a
flashlight before clogging up your vacuum hose.
About once a year you should pull your
refrigerator out and clean the back panel. Your refrigerator, though heavy,
should slide out rather easily for periodic cleaning underneath. For your
own safety, be sure to take stored items off the top of the refrigerator
before pulling it out. Also you will want to protect your floor from the
weight of the fridge. Get a piece of ¼ inch plywood and pull the fridge up
onto that before pulling it out all the way. This avoids tearing or
scratching the floor in front of your refrigerator.
Once pulled out, vacuum up the dust and dirt and
run the vacuum over any vents that have become clogged with dust. Once you
are behind your ‘fridge, you can unscrew the cardboard panel that covers the
compressor and coil and vacuum the interior. You may need a flashlight to
see what you’re doing in there.
If you own a refrigerator with the compressor on the top, you will not need to pull out the refrigerator to clean the back panel. These refrigerators run more efficiently because the heat that rises off the compressor doesn’t work against the cooling of the box. If you have one of these refrigerators, the removable panel will be at the top. You should still remove that panel once a year to vacuum out that area.
Otherwise, maintain fresh food by periodically
cleaning out the interior of the refrigerator. Unwrapped or unsealed foods
leave odors that affect the taste of other foods. Even the ice in the
icemaker can get stale, so dump the ice every now and then. Grinding the
ice up periodically in the garbage disposal has added benefits for the
garbage disposal. The ice will sharpen the blades and help clean the
disposal itself.
